Sisterhood of Motherhood

by Claire Hackett in Dungannon, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

We did it
On 6th May 2020 we successfully raised £2,000 with 49 supporters in 35 days

The aim is to help women as they become mothers- to establish a community of support and generate income to fund timely, professional help.

With more money, I could rent premises to operate as a support hub! Once social distancing is over...

For now, I am my team! Well... plus the network of amazing women I know are out there to whom I can refer the mums in need of support.

Who I am and why I want your help...

I am a mum of 3 crazy children currently aged 8, 6 and 3. I work part time in community development working with families and I have 6 years of experience volunteering with parenting charities and breastfeeding support. This time in regular contact with mothers, listening to and supporting them, has given me good insight into what women need and the gap that currently exists- a gap into which their mental health, identity and self- worth can fall.

Often, this gap is filled with volunteers and, to me, this is an issue of feminism and inequality. Maternity is a largely female area, propped up my mainly female volunteers giving their time and expertise for free. I think this needs to change.

How I think my project can make a difference.

Through my social enterprise, I aim to address both these things- fill the gap in support by having money available so that a mum in need of skilled breastfeeding support, for example, can hire a private IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant), or a mum suffering with incontinence could have a thorough postnatal pelvis health check with a women's health physio, thus getting the mother the best help and also paying the professional for their time and expertise.

The power of community

I have a vision for how I want this to be supported on a community level. I believe in the power of human connection, particularly mother to mother support. I intend on bringing women together in groups where they can provide each other with peer support, while learning a skill and making items that we can sell to get the Social Enterprise to self-sustainability. This group support, together with being part of something helping other women, will have a positive impact on the women's mental health.

Why I need your financial support.

To get the project started, I want to create 'SupportHer' Bags for pregnant women. These will be a "real life", ethical version of a well-known pack women currently receive when they are pregnant. The 'SupportHer' Bags will contain evidence based information, sign-posting to local sources of support, real life stories from families and some local, ethical products including affirmation cards. These will be sold to raise funds for the social enterprise.

I need money to purchase bags and get this going! In the current climate, with the restrictions on maternity services due to the coronavirus pandemic, women will really be in need of support during and after their pregnancy. This is why I want to crowdfund as hopefully, with your support, I can not only start the bags and hopefully support some local businesses at this difficult time, but also have some valuable funds in place to provide the support in the community that our mothers will undoubtedly need.
